Recruitment Of Trainees - New Zealand
Education and Training Committee
Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists
New Zealand National Selection Process for 2010 trainees
- Advanced trainee positions are advertised in June and applicants are invited to submit an application form, CV, and hospital preference sheet (all hospitals in which the applicant would be interested in working ranked in numerical order of preference) and to ask their referees to submit a standardised referee form to the Secretary of ANZAN. Applicants are strongly advised to visit departments and meet with the Head of Department in which they would like to work before the interviews. The closing date is Friday 19 June.
- Applicants who meet the basic selection criteria are interviewed by a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee in New Zealand. At the end of the interview process, the committee ranks all applicants (using a score which takes account of the interview, CV and referees reports). Candidates who meet the predetermined cutoff score will be asked to submit a list of hospital positions in order of preference. This will matched against each hospital’s list of candidates in order of preference which takes into account the ranking of applicants. Trainees will only be guaranteed one core year of training at a single centre. There is the possibility of staying at a single centre for a second year of core training of the condidate is matched to that centre (from 2010 onwards). This may mean that a trainee has to move to another accredited training centre.
- After the matching process is completed, the process of matching unmatched applicants with unmatched hospitals is facilitated. At this stage, applicants and hospitals are informed of the results of the selection process. For those hospitals and applicants who have been successfully matched, no further negotiations will generally be considered.
